 10 am: Smilebox, "Send friends and family your favorite photos in albums" (North Room)

(New ½ n ½ Class, Watch, Listen and Learn, then do it yourself)

This Half N Half lecture will show how easy it is to access Smilebox online. You can download Smilebox for free or upgrade to the purchase version for additional effects.

Smilebox is software that will allow you to insert photos from your computer to select album themes. There are many themes and then albums to choose from. Subjects include holidays and family events. You can have music play as your creation is viewed. When you have completed the personalization and you are pleased with the results, it can be saved to DVD, printed or emailed. Bring along your laptop with some personal pictures so you can see how friendly this software is.

1 pm: Genealogy Workshop (South Room)

In the Genealogy Workshop, we usually start with everyone telling of their current genealogy research.  We all contribute suggestions  that could be used to further our research in a particular area; then one subject is covered that day with web sites that cover that particular subject shown on the computer.  Again it is an open class with everybody contributing & hopefully learning something new. Just drop in if you have an interest. Facilitator: Terri Rose.

1 pm:   Photoshop Elements Advanced Workshop (North Room)

Just drop in if you have an interest. Each month a technique, a special tool, or a plug-in, for Photoshop Elements will be demonstrated.  Those attending can then work on their own images at home and show their results at the next month's meeting.  Attendees should bring a flash drive for images and templates and lots of questions and answers.  This is not a basic Elements class. 7 pm: Photography Workshop (South Room)

This discussion group covers camera operation, picture taking techniques, photo improvements, e-mailing photos, and anything else related to photography. Share some of your photos with other members. Drop in if you have an interest. Facilitator Fred Wise

This class is an introduction to Hallmark Greeting Card Studio and the creation of greeting cards. In addition the class will explore other features in the program including the creation of artistic envelopes, letterheads, newsletter formats, business cards and much more. Instructor: Ron Dakin

7 pm: How to Use a Digital Camera (North Room)

This is one of the most popular classes at the club. So many people now use digital cameras. You will be introduced to the basic operation of a digital camera and what the various features can do. Instructor: Fred Wise

1 pm: Picasa, Import, Organize, Improve your Photos (North Room)

Do you have a camera full of pictures? In this class you will see how they can be loaded into your PC, how Google's free Picasa will organize your images, and what amazing tools the latest version of the program offers to improve your images. Instructor: Fred Wise

7 pm: Website Construction (North Room)

In the lecture you see how to research the availability of a domain name, how to shop for hosting and how a complete Website can be constructed using SiteSpinner, an inexpensive, fun software package for making simple or fancy Websites. Instructor: Brigitte Haag

7 pm: Linux Workshop (South Room)

The Linux workshop is a working session for users to bring their questions and experiences to the group.  Attendees are encouraged to bring their computers with them for use in the workshop. We are working with different subjects each week and expect to cover areas such as installation and administration, file systems, setting up servers (print, file, web, etc), using WINE and virtual machines, and other topics that the group is interested in. 1 pm: Working With Files and Folders (North Room)

New computer users tend to save everything to the Documents folder; but, eventually that list of documents becomes so long you can't find anything. Get your document, picture and video files organized by creating folders within these folders and placing items in them. Are you one of those who becomes confused when the program you are using asks you to save your document; but when the SAVE AS screen comes up, you can't figure out how to place your document in the correct folder? This Half 'n' Half will not only show you how it's done, but give you the chance to actually do it on your own laptop here where you can get help if you are having trouble. The newest point and shoot cameras are getting better all the time. They measure the light, the distance, they decide if you have backlight, and if Macro is needed. Still the person holding the camera has to make the most important decisions: when to press down on the button. The computer Club Expo is the most important promotional event of our Club. We have table displays for many of the classes we offer and all the club's instructors are available to answer any kind of questions. We offer free refreshments. We are asking all members to bring a friend or neighbor to the event October 10 at 5-8pm. It is free and open to the Public.

10 am: PhotoShop Elements, Basics (1 of 2)(North Room)

This session of our two part lecture will focus on using Photoshop Elements as a way of keeping track of and organizing your photos in a part of the program made just for this purpose.  We will also show some of the many improvements possible with PhotoShop Elements.  Do you have some photos that look like you may have to discard them ?  Probably not, after using some of the tools available in this PhotoShop editor.  Join us. 1 pm: Windows Movie Maker (North Room)

Learn how to make a professional looking slide show of your photos, or a movie of digital clips from a camcorder, and burn it to a DVD that can be played in a standard CD/DVD player. Easily add a beginning title page and a scrolling credits page at the end of your show. Add title pages before any photo or video clip, or add titles to them. Place transitions between photos or clips for that professional look. Edit video clips by trimming ends or cutting out segments. Use audio clips to add background music to your show. Using the latest version of MS Word, create your own mailing data base. Produce form letters that will look as if they were typed individually to each recipient. Batch print envelopes and labels. Word's Mail Merge feature lets you do all this. Instructor: Joann Frucchione

10 am: Windows DVD Maker (North Room)

(New ½ n ½ Class, Watch, Listen and Learn, then do it yourself)
Microsoft gave us a very nice program for authoring our DVD's. You can use your video clips taken with your digital camera as well as individual still photos. The program collects all your individual photos you insert and assembles them in a slideshow. You have several choices to customize your production to be just what you want. Your finished DVD will play in computers and also on your set top DVD players. Very easy program for you to use. Instructor: Ron Purkhiser

This second session expands on the basics for new computer users. Learn about web browsers.  What is a search engine, and how is it used?   What is a download?  How do I get those free programs I'm hearing about at the Club?  Get that expired trial software off your computer. 10 am: Downloading (free) Digital Music (North Room)

This class is an introduction on how to download free music from the internet and how to create CD's for your listening pleasure. Included are internet web sites where you can find your favorite music, whether it be Easy Listening, Country Western, Oldie Goldies, etc. Have a favorite band, artist, group? The old standards are all there. Instructor: Ron Dakin

1 pm: Using Email, (North Room)
This lecture will give you an overview of 3 separate email software programs; Outlook , Windows Mail and Gmail. You will see demonstrations of how to create, send, forward and delete emails. Also included in the lecture will be instructions on entering contacts and managing contact groups. You will see demonstrations on how to include an attachment as well as save an attachment received. The first hour will cover general email; setting up personal folders, contacts, and emptying the deleted items folder. The second hour will cover the same folders and additional features in Gmail. There are more customizing features in Gmail which is a service provided by for free from Google. Instructor: Pat Turek

After department reports, general club News, donations and Volunteer of the Month we feature 2 presentations. Michael Gonzales from Sprint will speak about Android Systems and our member David Lemon, a Coastguard Auxiliary Pilot, will talk about the CoastGuard Auxiliary.

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary volunteers operate in any mission as directed by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard or Secretary of Homeland Security. The mission of the Auxiliary is to contribute to the safety and security of our citizens, ports, and waterways. We balance our missions of Recreational Boating Safety and Coast Guard Support with
Maritime Homeland Security and other challenges that emerge as a result of a post-9/11 era.
HCC member David Lemon, Assistant District Staff Officer with the Auxiliary Air program, serves as an Instructor Pilot and Flight Examiner. Mr. Lemon will present an overview of the Auxiliary Program.

10 am: PhotoShop Elements, Advanced (2 of 2)(North Room)

During the second session of this two part lecture, we will discover some of the many projects you can do in addition to the usual improving of your photos.  Do you have a scene you'd like to share with somebody, but the camera just doesn't take a wide enough picture?  No problem, you can make a panorama of several stitched photos, and PhotoShop does all the work for you !   Do you have a photo of something lovely in the foregound, but something not so lovely in the background is spoiling the picture ?  Yes, you can remove the unwanted areas and replace it with something different and more pleasing.  You'll be amazed the things PhotoShop can do for you.  Join us. Video chatting used to be called Video Conferencing when business meetings were conducted with some members present only on the screen. In the meantime millions of Grandparents enjoy chatting with their grandchildren living all over the world. Skype was the first to become popular, now totally free video chatting is possible with many companies. Your gmail account also includes free video chatting and much more. Come and see how it works and what choices you have to make it work.

1 pm: Convert your Records and Cassettes to Music CDs (North Room)

In this class you will be introduced to a FREE program called Audacity. We will be using the latest version, 1.3, to accommodate all Windows operating systems. See how to connect your player to the PC. When you have transferred the music of your records or tapes to your computer, you can get rid of most of the audible kicks and scratches with a few key clicks of your mouse. Burning the CD is the final step of the procedure with the FREE Windows Media Player. We will also look at a device and program you can buy to do this quite a bit easier, if you want to invest a little money ($30-$40) in your project. Instructor: Ron Purkhiser

Microsoft decided to make them available again in a separate download for those who wanted them back. In this lecture, we will look at several components of the latest version of this package: Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Windows Live Moviemaker, and Windows Live Mesh. We will also look at a free online storage service called Skydrive. This week we will be looking at Windows Live Mail, Skydrive (not part of the Windows Live Essentials package but a great accompaniment for those who like to share large numbers of photos or need to transmit large files too large to email) and Windows Live Mesh. 1 pm: Picasa – Making Collages and Movies (North Room)

We'll look at two of the many fun projects you can do with your free Picasa program. You'll be amazed at the many varied collages you can make with all kinds of options. Movies are Picasa's name for slideshows, and they have a very friendly interface to guide you through this. After we make the movie, we'll look at the Windows DVD maker to burn your project to a disc that you can play in your set top DVD player. Instructor: Ron Purkhiser

10 am: Internet Inspired Crafts Workshop (North Room)

Never before in mankind have we had access to so much information, so easily. In this workshop we browse the net and then pick a craft project that can be tackled in the second hour. In the first session we made some paper sculptures, in September we built a pop up Christmas Card. Everybody loving crafts will have a very good time in this workshop. Join and show us your newest project to be announced. Future projects will include work with clay, or glass or paper.... Facilitator: Brigitte Haag

 

1 pm: PC Maintenance and Security (North Room)

PCs are complicated machines and they need weekly and monthly clean ups to keep them running at full speed. The available Windows maintenance tools, and security settings for Internet Explorer and e-mail will be discussed and demonstrated. Firewalls, antivirus and antispyware software will be discussed; they are important components of a package of tools that help keep a computer healthy and running well.   Instructor: Gray Alexander

Membership Committee (MemCom) meetings are held on the Last Monday of the Month, usually in the Lecture Room. Members who are interested in joining together to discuss the Clubs business and social activities are encouraged to participate. All members are welcome. We offer many enjoyable, informative and entertaining events through out the year. This takes lots of planning and MemCom meetings are where this happens. Please come to the meetings and share your talents, thoughts and ideas. Your participation is appreciated.

1 pm: Gadget Workshop (North Room)
This workshop will deal with all the modern gadgets being sold today. I-Pads, SmartPhones, Digital cameras just to name a few. Everyone attending is encouraged to being one of their gadgets you may need help with.
